A Ghanaian woman has criticized the country’s healthcare system, saying poor treatment during childbirth is one of the reasons some women choose to give birth abroad.

Speaking on a podcast on CH Tourism TV on YouTube, she said, “Our healthcare system is very poor, so if I have the means, I wouldn’t choose to give birth here due to the risk of death or serious complications. I would rather travel abroad to have my child because of the quality of care and treatment there.

“In some cases, Ghanaian nurses are said to threaten women in labour, even holding canes to force them to push. But abroad, you wouldn’t see someone threatening a woman who is already in pain. Here, it sometimes feels like they don’t care, and these are some of the reasons people choose to travel abroad to give birth.”
