The National Coordinator for the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has urged Ghanaians travelling abroad to make it a priority to register with the country’s diplomatic missions in their host countries to ensure they can be easily contacted in times of emergency.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, Mr Vanderpuye said many Ghanaians fail to notify Ghanaian missions after leaving the country, a situation he described as a major oversight.

“One mistake many of us make is that when we pick up our passport, board a plane and leave the shores of Ghana, we think that is the end of it. But it is not,” he said.

According to him, Ghanaians abroad should make a conscious effort to introduce themselves to the nearest Ghanaian diplomatic mission upon arrival in their host country.

“Every Ghanaian, wherever you find yourself, should at least introduce yourself to the mission. This makes it easier for the mission to monitor your situation, guide you when necessary, and advise you in times of crisis,” he explained.

Mr Vanderpuye noted that in situations such as international conflicts, including tensions involving Iran, United States and Israel, proper registration enables diplomatic missions to quickly locate and assist citizens.

“When the situation worsens, it becomes easier for the mission to identify and evacuate you if necessary,” he added.
