On August 6, 2025, Ghana awoke to heartbreaking news: a military Z-9 helicopter had crashed in the Adansi District of the Ashanti Region, claiming the lives of all eight individuals on board. Among the deceased were:
- Defense Minister Edward Omane Boamah and
 - Environment, Science & Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed,

alongside Samuel Sarpong (Vice-Chair of the ruling NDC), Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Mohammed Muniru, and the three military aircrew.
A National Tragedy
The accident, occurring just as Ghana’s cabinet was actively addressing illegal mining in the gold-rich Obuasi area, has been described by government officials as a “national tragedy.” Flags were ordered flown at half-mast, and President John Mahama declared three days of national mourning.
Identifying the Fallen Heroes
Investigators recovered the helicopter’s black boxes swiftly and transported remains to Accra for DNA analysis. Burial ceremonies were delayed to ensure proper identification.
Tributes and Leadership Amid Loss
President Mahama, flanked by senior officials, led high-level delegations to grieve with families. In the wake of the tragedy, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson was appointed acting Defence Minister, while Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah became acting Environment Minister.
Legacy of Service
Each person aboard represented unwavering dedication. Minister Omane Boamah had recently been appointed defence chief, while Minister Muhammed was overseeing environmental protection efforts critical to Ghana’s sustainable development. Their fall underscores the price of service and commitment to national progress.
In Memory
Though gone too soon, the fallen leaders of August 6 left behind enduring legacies of service, courage, and nation-building. Ghana remembers you served the nation gallantly. May your souls rest in peace.
